Julian Castro: In the Post 9/11 Era We Started to Criminalize Illegal Border Crossings and That’s Where a Lot of the Problems Started

‘In the post 9/11 era we started to criminalize [illegal border crossings] and that’s where a lot of the problems that we’re seeing today arose’

EXCERPT:

CASTRO: “In the post 9/11 era we started to criminalize it and that's when a lot of the problems that we're seeing today arose. Somebody might ask, well what do you mean? You know, why not keep them criminal? And the reason for that is that that law that criminalizes that is the main law that allow this Trump administration to incarcerate the parents and then separate them from their little children. I don't want this administration or future administrations to be able to engage in the kind of cruelty that we've seen."
