Fox News: City of Chicago Preparing to Sue Jussie Smollett

‘Smollett’s attorney says the actor will not be intimidated by what he calls threats’

EXCERPT:

TOBIN: "Good afternoon, Ed. Bill McCaffrey with the Chicago Department of Law said they are drafting the suit. We’ll all get it by e-mail at some point. Meantime, the Smollett team is defiant. A letter from attorney Mark Geragos says the Smollett team will depose mayor Rahm Emanuel and superintendent of police Eddie Johnson if the city moves forward with this suit. It also says 'your unprecedented attempt to file a civil lawsuit against Mr. Smollett for repayment of investigation is unconstitutional.' It was at the end of March when the city demanded Smollett pay $130,000 for the overtime investigators worked after the actor said he had attacked. As you mentioned, the city said the deadline was yesterday and the lawyers would start drafting that suit. Smollett did not pay. The letter says the city could hit Smollett for up to three times the original amount because he missed that deadline."
