Giridharadas: New York Rejecting Amazon Is a Triumph of Democracy Over Helipad Plutocracy

‘Jeff Bezos wanted special treatment’

GIRIDHARADAS: "Today was a victory in my mind for American democracy over helipad plutocracy."
HOST: "Why?"
GIRIDHARADAS: "The reality is there are 8 million people in this city who are happy to be here without getting a welfare check as -- from the government simply for their presence to open a business here, do their jobs here. Jeff Bezos wanted special treatment. He wanted kind of the bottle service version of public policy, which is, you know, just being here having access to the city, this talent, this extraordinary place that we're seeing behind us, wasn't enough for him. He wanted billions of dollars in subsidies.”
