NBC’s Engel: Jordan Has Stepped up Attacks on ISIS, But It Hasn’t Made a Difference

‘ISIS still holds the vast majority of the territory it held before ... there are still the same problems’

"There have been more airstrikes. Jordan is claiming success. Jordan is saying that it has significantly intensified the terror campaign and that is more and more engaged in this fight. The question is how much of an impact is it having and so far, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down ISIS in a major way. It's sort of more of what we've seen before, not a significant change, not a qualitative development ...

Secretary Kerry said that 22 percent of territory that ISIS has held has been taken away. He also said that many top leaders from ISIS have been killed. The problem is as we have seen with al Qaeda in the past. You take away the leadership and they can quickly be replaced. ISIS still holds vast majority of the territory it held before. When we were out on the front lines with some of the ground troops, there are still the same problems that they had before: not enough support, not enough partners on the ground, different visions for what the future of Iraq and Syria are supposed to be.

I think it's far too early for either Jordan or the United States to claim any real significant success."
