McAuliffe: I Don’t Want Dems Making ‘False Promises’ Like Free College

‘The Democratic Party should not support Terry McAuliffe’s kids going to college’

EXCERPT:

MCAULIFFE: "Well, let me just say this, I wrote that editorial and op-ed because it's important. You've seen Donald Trump, literally compulsive liar, Washington Post wrote the other day, 18 lies or misstatements every single day the last year. Americans are looking for president who tells the truth, but also we got to make sure [inaudible] Democrats running for president. We don't need a compulsive liar, we need a compulsive optimist and a compulsive realist who actually will get things done, who will deal with the kitchen table issues that families are concerned about. And I don't want us Democrats going out making false promises. As I said in the op-ed that I wrote, free college is not the answer. The Democratic Party shouldn't support Terry McAuliffe's kids going to college. I can afford to send my kids. What we ought to be doing, like we did in Virginia, is we ought to have a workforce to performance development grant, make sure that we're giving the kids today an education with skills to match the 7 million jobs that are open today in the United States of America. We did that in Virginia. You go get one of my 166 credentials because we needed workers, you'll do it, we'll pay for it and you'll have no debt. So I want the focus to be on, here are the realistic things that we need to do, but literally number one issue of course in the country today is health care. We have got to fix the health care mess and we've got to lay out a plan and whatever we call it, Medicare for All or whatever names we want to assign to it we, need to make sure, Jason, every person in America has coverage. Not access to coverage, but they actually have coverage."
