General Jack Keane: It Was Inevitable that Releasing the Gitmo 5 Would Have a Bad Result

‘They didn’t see anything wrong releasing these top five because they knew they would never get out any other way’

KEANE: “One of the things that I learned out of this and I didn't see it at the time, that what I just said, the statements I made when the swap was made. But I’m convinced now as we have seen the White House’s behavior, not the Pentagon's, the White House's behavior in emptying out Gitmo because they can’t close it, that these five top Taliban leaders would never have been released. They would have been the ones who stay to the very end. But the fact that they were in the swap, got five more people out of the Gitmo. And I’m being little cynical here but I’m comfortable in making that judgment. I think that was part of the White House’s motivation. They didn’t see anything wrong with releasing these top five because they knew they would never get out any other way.”

HEMMER: “Right. And you knew you had a cover by bringing American home whether you believe he was a deserter or not, Bowe Bergdahl."
