Before he returns to Last Week Tonight on February 8, John Oliver stopped by the Late Show with David Letterman where he shared his take on this week’s Super Bowl as someone who was not born and raised in America.

“I’m on a Green Card, so I think if I don’t watch the Super Bowl, don’t I get ejected?” Oliver asked David Letterman. “I love it because it’s peak America,” he continued. “It’s when America Americanized itself to the full American extent.”

While he’s used to watching big sporting events, Oliver said, “I’m not used to seeing fighter jets fly over the stadium at the start and then having half an hour of Katy Perry throwing glitter hand grenades, or whatever she’s doing.”

“You’ve got to understand how intimidating the Super Bowl is to the rest of the world,” Oliver added. “Because when you beam that around the world, everyone else is thinking, ‘If they’re capable of this, what else could they do?’”
