Mark Warner: Whitaker ‘Has Enormous Conflicts of Interest’ if He Tries to Oversee Mueller

‘He is very much a Trump loyalist’

EXCERPT:

WARNER: "I do not want to weigh in, because based on probably how I am viewed at the White House, me weighing in might hurt somebody’s chances. I did think that it was unfortunate that we all knew the President was going to try to get rid of Jeff Sessions, that when he got rid of him, he did not put in place as acting Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney General, Solicitor General, that instead he picked this gentleman, Mr. Whitaker who I do not know. But who seems to have the biggest asset being that he is very much a Trump loyalist. And I think that he has enormous conflicts of interest if he's going to try oversee any of the Mueller investigation, both from what he has already written and said, but also from the fact, and this gets a little complicated, I will be very brief, that he was affiliated as a campaign treasurer, I believe, to Sam Clovis, who was affiliated with George Papadopoulos, who is kind of the beginnings of the Mueller investigation. Clovis has already been brought into the Mueller investigation. To me, it seems like an obvious ethical conflict of interest. So, I think the President could’ve avoided these kind of problems if he'd picked somebody maybe who had already been approved by the Congress."
