McFaul on Obama’s Handling of Putin: ‘I Actually Think the Strategy’s Been Right’

‘As to when it will work ... time will tell. Nobody really knows’

"I actually think the strategy is been right by the administration and by the allies in Europe which is to punish Russia, isolate Russia, strengthen NATO so that he's not tempted, Mr. Putin is not tempted to threatened a NATO ally and try to shore up the economy of Ukraine. You have to do all three of those things not just sanctions. As to when it will work ... time will tell, nobody really knows. But the fact is that over years if there is going to be economic recession in Russia, that will have a political impact on Putin. It’s just hard to measure exactly when that impact becomes a moment that challenges his foreign policy."
