SCHULTZ: Romney’s Auto Plan Would Have Let Industry Die

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Sunday hit Mitt Romney for having opposed the Obama administration’s auto bailouts, saying the Republican presidential candidate would have left those in the manufacturing industry “twisting in the wind.”

“In Ohio, 80 of 82 counties in Ohio actually have an auto-manufacturing facility, and so if left to Mitt Romney, they essentially would have all gone out of business because he would have left those folks twisting in the wind,” the Democratic National Committee chairwoman said on “Fox News Sunday.”

The Florida congresswoman’s comments came days after President Barack Obama campaigned in Ohio, where he touted his record of bailing out American auto companies and highlighted his commitment to improving economic conditions for middle and working class Americans.

Wasserman Schultz conceded that the economy still has a “long way to go,” but maintained that Obama has shown a strong commitment to lifting up Hispanics and African Americans.

“President Obama has been committed to not just getting the economy turned around and creating jobs but closing the achievement gap in education for Hispanics and African-Americans, investing in education and innovation and making sure we can keep folks in their homes,” she said. “If you compare that to Mitt Romney’s focus which was, ‘Let’s let Detroit go bankrupt and not rescues the American automobile industry,’ African-Americans would have been devastated by that in particular."

“When it comes to policies like immigration reform," she added, "Mitt Romney’s the most extreme presidential candidate in history on immigration policy.”
