Peter King: Obama Has Made it Nearly Impossible To Get Immigration Reform Done

‘To get it done now, to me, is going to be very, very difficult’

“I do believe however we have to make a good faith effort to go forward on immigration. That’s been made very difficult by what the president did. I think if the president was serious about getting immigration legislation -- first of all, he did nothing on an executive order for six years. He could have said that he believes he has the right to issue this order and say he is going to do it on June 1, July 1, whatever.

That would put pressure on Republicans to actually attempt to negotiate and work out a bill in good faith. It would probably be somewhat different from the Senate, but I think it would be a good step forward. Then, if by July 1 if there is no bill, the president can issue executive order. We can do what we feel we have to do.

That would have given the real opportunity to get it done. To get it done now, to me, it’s going to be very, very difficult and I blame the president for that. I think John Boehner and Mitch McConnell did want to get immigration legislation through now. If nothing else, just for the very practical reason of taking it off the table or at least minimizing its impact in the 2016 elections.”
