Angus King: I Believe the President Is Doing the Right Thing Opening Up This Dialogue with North Korea

‘The difficulty is this is the fifth time we have been down this road with the North Korea’

RUS EXCERPT:

KING: "Well, the first thing I want to say is I support the meeting. I believe the president is doing the right thing opening up this dialogue. The difficulty is this is the fifth time we have been down this road with the North Korea apps. I think my counsel to the president, not that he’s asked, is to be careful and not make any commitments. Because in the past the north Korea ans have been willing to make commitments which they have later just ignored. In the meantime, they get concessions of some kind. For example, a peace treaty, which has been talked about to end the armistice. Call it a peace treaty, would be a win for North Korea, an acknowledgment of North Korea and that may be appropriate but in the context of a larger deal. I’m just worried that the atmospheics of this meeting could get us swept up into agreeing to things that ultimately apart going to work. So I guess it’s cautious optimism would be the way I would characterize you."
