Parkland’s Hogg: Prisoners ‘Are American Citizens with Just as Much Rights’ as Us

‘We need to start treating prison not like punishment but like what it is and that supposed to be rehabilitation for these individuals’

EXCERPT:

HOGG: "The other thing that’s terrifying to me, for example, is many of these students, when they eventually get into prison because they get in the cycle where there's something on their record, where they can’t get a job so they have to commit to life of crime to make money and then they have to go back to prison and then come out of prison and not get a job because of that. What happens is when certain politicians like Governor Rick Scott are lobbied by the privatized prison industry, which are private prisons which are specifically paid by the government essentially to keep these people in, that’s not how we’re going to fix the situation. We need to start treating prison not like punishment but like what it is, and that supposed to be rehabilitation for these individuals. These are American citizens and they have just as much of a right as you or I do, and we need to treat them as such because right now it is disgusting.”
