Pentagon Spokesman Claims There’s No Threat of ISIS Taking Baghdad Right Now

‘We do not assess that Baghdad is under imminent threat right now’

“Last night we did an air drop of supplies to the Kurdish forces that are inside Kobani and trying to defend that city against ISIL. Every indication that we have the morning is that the bundles made it to the hands we want to make them to, at least the vast majority did. So we’re trying shore up their ability to continue to defend that town. Up in the north of Iraq, our partner nations, many coalition nations are still resupplying Kurdish forces there in the north. We have a joint operations center up in Erbil.

We are doing some 'advise and assist' at the very high level for Kurdish fighters up there in the north. And they are holding on their own, there's no question about that. Let’s go down Baghdad. You talked about the {IED} attack. That should become as no surprise to anybody that ISIL wants to continue to threaten the capital city. This is a group that not only is a group of terrorists but they want to grab ground. They want infrastructure. They have these governs designs, this caliphate vision. So it should come as no surprise they are threatening Baghdad.

That said, we do not assess that Baghdad is under imminent threat right now. There’s no masses of formation of ISIL fighters around the capital and the Iraqi security forces are doing a good job stiffening their defenses around the city.”
