Randi Weingarten: Trump’s Plan to Arm Teachers ‘Will Make Things Less Safe’

‘It is the illusion of safety but, in practicality, it will actually undermine teaching and learning in schools’

RUSH EXCERPT:

WEINGARTEN: "Let’s think about this. Airlines. We had made clear that no guns and no knives get on to airlines. We’ve made clear that no guns and no knives get into courthouses. We’ve made clear that they don’t get into other places as well. So schools where you have little kids, where they need nurturing, where they need a safe and welcome environment where high school students need to thrive, how dare we try and solve situations that Australia could solve by common sense gun rules by basically saying we need more guns, not less guns? So what I’m saying is that the more you know schools, the more you know that this kind of solution will not only not work in schools, it will make things less safe. It is the illusion of safety but, in practicality, it will actually undermine teaching and learning in schools. That is why school teachers and parents and students from Marines and gun owners have essentially said I don’t want to do this. We know people are scared. You want to make sure that we actually do sensible things to increase school safety, to increase funding for mental health services and support services. You want to do things like Australia did. But you do not want to arm teachers with a handgun against an ar-15. It’s crazy."
