NYPD Breaks Reporter’s Camera for Interviewing Students (Mediaite)

NY1 recently filmed a segment about police officers hustling black and Latino students out of the predominantly-white neighborhoods where they attend school. In a thing that should no longer surprise you, they ran into trouble when they attempted to interview students, including one officer breaking their camera.

According to their sources, kicking minority students out after school was a common practice among the NYPD’s school safety officers, and several students confirmed that it had happened to them. However, whenever they attempted to film schools in multiple neighborhoods, officers insisted that they weren’t allowed to videotape them or the schools, despite NYC law stating they were allowed to do so on public sidewalks.

In once instance, an officer broke their camera, and another called the actual cops on the reporters. (The cops eventually explained to the school officers that yes, the reporters were allowed to be there, and yes, they could videotape any NYPD officer.)
