Carlos Curbelo: Trump Said ‘Something Derogatory, Something that Dehumanized People’

‘The president once again insisting he’s not a racist because once again he said something that makes people think he is’

EXCERPT:

CURBELO: "Good morning, Chris. I don't know exactly what was said in that meeting because I wasn't there --"
CUOMO: "Right."
CURBELO: "-- but certainly, some derogatory. Something that dehumanized people was said and that's a shame. Especially on a day like today, we should be reminded that people should be judged by the content of their character, not by where they come from or what they look like. And when it comes to immigrants we should judge immigrants by what they have to contribute to this country, not which country they come from. And, by the way, ironically, this is a type of immigration system that the president and a lot of people around him say they want. A system that does not focus on where people come from but on who they are and what they have to contribute. So, this is a shame. It was a setback. And the only thing more important than discussing this issue is reaching a compromise on immigration that takes care of at least the 800,000 DACA recipients who are at risk. These are people who will lose their ability to work in our country, to function in our country, and who will be deportable, quite frankly sooner or later, if we don't get this done. So in spite of all of this, Chris, there are many Republicans and Democrats -- we've been in contact over the weekend -- seeking that middle ground, seeking that compromise."
