In Interview, Biden Repeatedly Mentions that Doug Jones Used to Work for Him

‘He was a young man when he started working for me’

EXCERPT:

BIDEN: “... he was in law school. He work with me, I went down and campaigned for him. And you know, last night.”
KING: “Have you talked to him since the victory?”
BIDEN: “Yeah I did. I talked to him three times yesterday.” (Laughter)
KING: “What did he say? Because he was so giddy.”
BIDEN: “He’s over the moon and he’s really anxious to get to work. If you noticed he talked about — last night he talked about children’s health care. You know, with all the excitement he didn’t go after Moore. He talked about children’s health care. And this is a guy who was a serious, serious guy, a great prosecutor, a man of great integrity.”
KING: “He also said something very interesting I thought, Mr. Biden, at his victory conference. He said, what happened in Alabama shows that we can be united in this country."
BIDEN: "That's right."
KING: "Do you think it will send this message to the rest of the country, both Democrats and Republicans?”
BIDEN: “Well I think it is. And I think probably some of the happiest people in America today are the Republicans in the Senate. No. I -- I -- I -- I -- I genuinely mean it. I genuinely mean it.” [crosstalk]
KING: “Explain what you mean by that.”
BIDEN: “What I mean by that, the divisiveness that was caused within the Republican Party by Bannon and all the sort of bile that comes out of the administration is just — and I know the majority of the members of the Senate on the Republican side and they’re decent people. They don't -- they're not comfortable in this territory.”
DICKERSON: "Did you give him advice in one of these three phone calls?"
BIDEN: “Well, I gave him advice early on because he’d keep calling me. I mean, he -- look, he’s been a — he was a young man when he started working for me and helping me."
