Smiley: Shutdown Threat, Lack of Gun-Control Debate Disproves American Exceptionalism (National Review)

PBS host Tavis Smiley believes that resistance to another push for gun-control legislation, following this week’s Navy Yard shooting, and Republicans’ threatening a government shutdown over the president’s health-care law, is “all the evidence we need” to call into question the idea of American exceptionalism.

“When Republicans want to shut down the government over political posturing, and you can kill innocent children at Sandy Hook and there’s no real gun-control debate . . . and nobody at this table believes that a gun-control debate is going to come out of this,” Smiley argued, the U.S. must have a “course correction” soon.
