EXCERPT:

VINER: “What do you think Donald Trump’s problem is with you as the first Muslim mayor?”
KHAN: “Yeah... Can I just say I am a reluctant participant in this issue.”
VINER: “Is that quite true, though? Is that quite true? Because I’ve got quite a lot of evidence of you having a go at him for his Islamophobia before he was even a nominee.”
KHAN: “Let me explain why this is a really important point that you raise. I love America. I love Americans. I have a family in America. America is a beacon for so many things. Just look at history of America. Just think about some of the politicians and civil rights leaders that you admire. Now, during the presidential campaign, Donald Trump said, and I’m going to paraphrase, I’m not going to quote verbatim, ‘I’m going to ban Muslims from coming to the U.S.A., but I’ll make an exception for Sadiq Khan.’ My view was — I was going to say, ‘Firstly, save for in the eyes of my mom, I am not exceptional. Secondly, think about what you’re saying because what you’re saying is not dissimilar to what Daesh or so-called ISIS say. What do they say? They say there’s a clash of civilizations, it’s impossible to be a Muslim and a Westerner, the West hates us. You’re inadvertently playing their game. You’re helping them in what they want to lead people to believe. But also, think about the contribution proud Americans who are Muslim make to your country: business people, students, artists, politicians, I could go on. And do you really want to have a situation where a president of the United States of America, the very man what the U.S.A. is, say, ‘We’re going to ban Muslims?’’ So, I was asked the question and I gave an honest answer.
