Stephen Colbert began his show Thursday night on a serious note to address the terrorist attack that took place in Barcelona.

“This is a heart-breaking reminder that evil is real and the United States is not alone in fighting it,” he said.

He then read President Trump‘s Twitter reaction to the attack, something Colbert actually commended him for.

“Thank you, sir. Simple. Dignified. Presidential,” he said sincerely and urged his reluctant audience to clap.

But it didn’t take long for The Late Show host to stop going easy on Trump.

“That’s what you want. That’s what you hope for. That’s all you can ask. He’s right, we love you, Spain,” Colbert continued. “And I was sincerely happy to see that kind of moral leadership from our president…for about 45 minutes.”

Colbert then mocked Trump for reviving the unverified tall tale of how Gen. John Pershing stopped Islamic extremism and played a clip of Trump telling it on the campaign trail.

“That is a dark story,” he reacted.  “No wonder his kids turned out the way they did.”
