"I think it's important for the president to fire Steve Bannon," King said in an interview with ABC's New York affiliate. "He should go."

Bannon, the president's chief strategist, called a writer, unprompted, at the liberal magazine and expounded on several topics Tuesday, one of which included his hope that Democrats "talk about racism every day" to the benefit of the GOP.

"The Democrats," he said, "the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats."
