Chris Matthews ended his 5pm hour of Hardball Monday with a “big ask” to his MSNBC viewers. In light of the news that the network is bringing Ed Schultz‘s The Ed Show to 5pm and eliminating the first, live hour of Hardball, Matthews pleaded with his audience to “adjust your evening ritual.”

“It’s going to our hour–our one hour–to share our points of view on what’s happening in the country,” Matthews said. He compared his “big ask” to the times in people’s lives when they ask to borrow the car from your dad or ask someone to marry you. “So now I’m asking you. I’d really appreciate it for you to start sharing your time with me as soon as it’s possible for you starting at 7 o’clock.” Matthews finished with a sincere, “Thanks for being part of all this.”
