Notre Dame Student: ‘Members of Our Own Community Felt Unwelcome ... Even Unsafe’

‘This is not appropriate event for this kind of political discipline’

EXCERPT:

TYKSINSKI: “So what I think is that the walkout was in response to the fact that members of our own community felt unwelcome, uncomfortable and even unsafe with the invitation of Mike Pence. I really believe that if that’s the case for whoever the invitation is, I would be walking out in solidarity with the students who don't feel welcome on their own campus at their own graduation. So our focus has just been this is not appropriate event for this kind of political discourse. This should have been the event where all of the graduates and all of their family members could have felt welcome. So political discourse should be happening in other context at this campus, not at our commencement.”
