Michael Steele: GOP Does Not Have a ‘Sympathetic’ Attitude Towards Women and They Will ‘Pay a Price’

‘They don’t want to litigate sexual harassment claims regarding a judicial nominee six weeks before a general election’

EXCERPT:

TUR: "Does the GOP have a sustainable position on women’s rights and do you think they come off generally as sympathetic towards women and is their attitude sustainable?"

STEELE: "At a national level, I think the general consensus is no. It’s not been something that’s sustainable. You can go around the country and find individual candidates, you can find pockets here and there, but there’s not been a consistent message with respect to those types of issues that impact women, minorities, in a way that the party can translate it, if you will, from the top to the bottom, and bottom to the top. That has not been the case. Some of us have tried in the past to do that with limited success because believe it or not, as odd as it sounds, there’s some degree of resistance to it. A lot of us can’t figure out what it is. I’m pro-life. Doesn’t mean I’m going to become a pro-choice Republican if I advocate about issues that are important to women. It’s not that narrow. It can be a broader argument that can be made. Everyone seems to be resistant and I think they're going to pay a price because of it."
